LiPo Battery Safety Guide: Everything You Need to Know

by RCCrafter Team 24 May 2026

Introduction

LiPo batteries are the powerhouse behind modern RC performance, but they require respect. Mishandled LiPo batteries can swell, catch fire, or even explode. This guide covers essential safety practices every RC hobbyist must follow.

Step 1: Charging Safety

  • Always use a LiPo-compatible charger — NiMH or generic chargers can cause fires.
  • Charge on a fireproof surface — Use a LiPo safety bag, concrete floor, or fireproof charging mat.
  • Never charge unattended — Stay in the room while charging.
  • Charge at 1C — A 5000mAh battery should charge at 5A max.
  • Balance charge every time — This ensures all cells charge evenly.

Step 2: Storage Safety

  • Store at storage voltage — 3.7-3.85V per cell (50-60% charged). Most chargers have a Storage mode.
  • Keep in a cool, dry place — Room temperature (20-25C) is ideal.
  • Use a LiPo bag or ammo box — For safe storage and transport.
  • Never puncture or crush — Physical damage is the #1 cause of LiPo failures.

Step 3: During Use

  • Stop when voltage drops — Most ESCs have a low-voltage cutoff (LVC). Set it to 3.2V per cell.
  • Do not run them dead — Below 3.0V per cell causes permanent cell damage.
  • Monitor temperature — If the battery feels too hot to touch (60C+), let it cool.

Step 4: What to Do If a Battery Swells

A swollen LiPo means gas buildup inside the cells:

  • Do not puncture it!
  • Immediately disconnect and place in a fireproof container.
  • Take it to a proper battery recycling facility.
  • Do not continue to use or charge a swollen battery.

Step 5: Proper Disposal

  • Discharge to 0V using your charger discharge function or a LiPo discharger.
  • Soak in salt water for 24-48 hours (in a fireproof container).
  • Wrap in plastic bag and dispose at a battery recycling center.
  • Never throw LiPo batteries in regular trash.

Conclusion

LiPo safety is non-negotiable. Follow these guidelines and your batteries will serve you well for hundreds of cycles. Looking for safe, high-quality LiPo batteries? Check out our battery selection →
